Genograf® — the ancestral origin test

Two versions of the test

We offer genographic tests along either the paternal or the maternal line.

Y-Genograf® — the paternal line test

The paternal line is encoded on the male Y sex chromosome, which is inherited exclusively along the line of father, his father, his father and so on all the way back to a distant forefather, passing through dozens of generations almost unchanged. It therefore carries information about the history of the paternal line. The analysis can only be performed on male samples — if the test is intended for a woman, she must supply a sample from one of her male relatives on her father's side (a brother, father, paternal uncle, paternal cousin, paternal grandfather and so on).

Mt-Genograf® — the maternal line test

The maternal line is an analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is inherited exclusively along the line of mother, her mother, her mother and so on back to the distant foremother of the whole line. This DNA information too remains almost unchanged for dozens of generations and so carries information about the history of the maternal line. A mother passes her mitochondrial DNA on to all her children, daughters and sons alike — the test can therefore be carried out on male and female samples alike.

What the result looks like

With every version of the Genograf® test you gain access (subject to your consent) to our Czech National Genographic® Database — the only one of its kind — to either the paternal (Y) or the maternal (Mt) line section, through which you can contact users with a matching genetic profile and perhaps find your relatives. The Czech Republic is the genetic centre and heart of Europe. Alongside the typical Slavs we also have a significant share of Germanic peoples, Celts and even Vikings. That sets us apart from most other European countries, where one haplogroup always predominates markedly over the rest — R1b in Germany, Great Britain, Austria, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, R1a in Poland, Slovakia, Russia and Ukraine, and I1 in Sweden and Norway.

Paternal haplogroups

R1a

A typically Slavic group of Eastern European origin. Its earliest origin, 10–15 thousand years back, is placed in the Eurasian steppes, in what is now south-eastern Ukraine.

R1b

A typically Germanic — or Romance or Celtic — group of Western European origin. It arose in southern and south-western Europe, the refuge of the last ice age.

I2a

A typically South Slavic haplogroup originating in the Balkan peninsula, where it is still most common today.

I1

A Germanic haplogroup. Over time its carriers settled northern, north-western and western Europe — today it is most common in Scandinavia.

E1b1b

It spread from the Middle East into the Mediterranean. Today it is most strongly represented in northern and eastern Africa, and further in southern and south-eastern Europe.

Maternal clans

Helena

It predominates in the rest of Europe too, and originally comes from the south-west. Queen Maria Theresa, for instance, belonged to this clan.

Ursula

Its area of origin is the Mediterranean.

Tara

It comes from northern Italy.

Jasmine

Its origin lies in the Middle East.

Katrine

It arose in southern Europe — in what is now north-eastern Italy, on the Adriatic coast and at the southern foot of the Alps. It is most common in Ashkenazi and European Jewish populations.

The remaining haplogroups each account for less than 5 % in the Czech Republic and cover further parts of the world. Source: analysis of data from the Czech National Genographic Database, which in 2018 held almost 8,000 profiles along both the paternal and the maternal line.
